AI safety cameras are catching far more drivers

A compliance and admin headache worth getting ahead of. Fleet software firm FleetCheck is urging fleets to warn drivers about new artificial intelligence (AI) safety cameras rolling out nationwide, which detect not just speeding but harder-to-spot offences such as mobile phone use and not wearing a seatbelt; in one example, 2200 drivers were prosecuted in just four weeks on a single stretch of road.

The stakes for drivers are real, as using a handheld phone can mean six penalty points and a £200 fine.

Almost three million driving offences were committed in the UK in 2024, up 9% on the year and the highest on record.
The resulting paperwork is a growing and time-consuming burden for fleet managers. The advice is cheap to act on: tell drivers plainly that the new cameras are far more capable, set a clear, no-tolerance policy on phone use behind the wheel, and you protect both safety and your own admin load.
