Better driver training could fix the most common offence in fleets

Most at-work speeding offences stem from driver confusion rather than recklessness, according to new findings from RED Corporate Driver Training.

Surveying its nationwide network of instructors, RED found that around two in five fleet drivers struggle to identify correct speed limits across different road types, particularly those new to commercial vehicles. Trainers say unintentional speeding due to inattention or misunderstanding is the leading cause of fleet violations.

RED’s head of corporate, Greg Ford, said: “In the majority of cases, untrained drivers are speeding on a regular basis purely because they either don’t know what the speed limit is, have not understood how fast they should be going, or don’t know the limit for their particular vehicle.”

The company says education is key. Regular driver awareness training, vehicle-specific limit reminders and proper use of onboard driver aids could significantly reduce speeding-related penalties.
