BYD Atto 3 update signals next phase of EV charging and usability

BYD has revealed the next generation Atto 3, introducing new rapid charging technology and a significant boost in practicality as the brand continues to push into the mainstream EV market.

The headline development is BYD’s new “flash” charging capability. Using ultra high power chargers, the Atto 3 can charge from 10% to 97% in as little as nine minutes. While this depends on access to new 1500kW infrastructure, it signals where EV usability is heading, particularly for fleets where downtime remains a key barrier.

Beyond charging, the new model is larger and more practical. Boot space increases from 490 litres to 750, with additional front storage also expanded. For drivers, that translates into a more usable family car, better suited to carrying equipment, luggage or daily work essentials.

Range figures of up to 390 miles have been quoted under Chinese testing standards, although real world UK figures will be lower. Even so, improvements in efficiency and battery technology are clear.

For fleets, the bigger picture is strategic. Faster charging and improved practicality directly address two of the main friction points in EV adoption. The timing is less immediate, with the new model unlikely to reach the UK for at least a year, but it provides a clear indication of how quickly the segment is evolving.
