BYD follows Ford's lead as it turns Dolphin hatchback into compact e-v

BYD has unveiled the BYD Dolphin Cargo, marking its first step into the light commercial vehicle market with a small, car-based electric van.

Currently being showcased at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, the new model is based on the Dolphin hatchback but reworked for cargo use. It offers 1,000 litres of load space and a WLTP range of up to 265 miles.

The rear seats have been removed and replaced with a solid bulkhead, while the rear floor has been reshaped to create a flat loading area. What you end up with is something that looks and feels closer to a hatchback than a traditional van.

Instead of the usual boxy van format, this is aimed at drivers who don’t necessarily need a large load area but still want the practicality of a van. It’s smaller, easier to drive in tight streets, and less of a jump for anyone used to a standard car.

It also follows a similar idea already emerging elsewhere. Ford recently revealed a van version of its Explorer, pointing towards a growing interest in car-derived vans.

Full pricing and specification details for the Dolphin Cargo are still to come, but its debut suggests a shift towards more flexible, everyday-friendly van options.
