BYD Shark plug-in hybrid pickup opens for UK orders

BYD has opened UK orders for the Shark plug-in hybrid pickup, priced from £47,290 including VAT.

The five-seat double cab combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with two electric motors. It produces 436PS and 650Nm of torque, with permanent all-wheel drive.

Its 32.2kWh battery provides a claimed electric range of up to 55.9 miles. Total petrol-electric range stands at 419 miles.

The Shark supports 11kW AC and 55kW DC charging. A 30% to 80% rapid charge takes a claimed 21 minutes.

Vehicle-to-load technology allows the pickup to provide up to 6.6kW of electricity for tools and other equipment. This could make it useful for site-based and facilities fleets.

However, operators will need to assess its working capability carefully. The Shark can tow up to 2500kg and carry a maximum payload of 790kg.

Both figures are lower than the one-tonne payload and 3500kg towing capacity offered by several established pickups.

Standard equipment includes heated and ventilated front seats, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, head-up display and 360-degree camera.

The Shark could suit fleets undertaking lighter site work or local operations where regular charging is available. UK deliveries are expected to begin in late 2026.
