Two electric Isuzu D-Max pickups have entered operational service with Sheffield-based MHH Contracting.
The aggregates, waste-removal and recycling company operates more than 20 pickups and 40 larger commercial vehicles.
Its new electric D-Max models will work across construction sites, fields and farms, testing the pickup in demanding day-to-day conditions.
The D-Max EV combines permanent four-wheel drive with a payload of more than one tonne and a 3500kg towing capacity, starting at £28,755.
These figures allow it to retain the main working credentials of the diesel D-Max.
Its claimed combined driving range is 163 miles. DC charging is limited to 50kW, with an 80% recharge taking approximately one hour.
MHH plans to charge the vehicles overnight, removing the need for drivers to visit fuel stations. The company also expects lower servicing and running costs from the electric drivetrain.
The deployment provides an early indication of how the D-Max EV performs beyond controlled demonstrations and launch events.
A 163-mile range will not suit every pickup duty cycle, particularly when towing over longer distances.
However, it could work for local and regional operations where routes are predictable and vehicles return to a depot each night.
The electric D-Max comes with a five-year, 125,000-mile warranty. MHH may add further electric vehicles following the initial trial.
