Employers neglecting basic legal duties for grey-fleet drivers

Nearly half of employees using private vehicles for work journeys have never had their driving licences checked by their employers, according to new research from TTC Group. This lapse raises safety concerns, particularly as 20% of TTC’s 70,000 grey-fleet driver checks fail validation.

TTC CEO, David Marsh, called the findings 'alarming', noting that few employees are asked to present MOT or insurance documents. Just 31% said they’d shown a valid MOT, and only 35% had been asked to prove insurance.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, employers must ensure grey fleet vehicles are roadworthy and legally compliant.

Even more concerning, only 22% of employees had received a Driving for Work policy – a legal necessity – and fewer than 1-in-5 were offered driver training. Just 11% had been asked to fit telematics equipment.

TTC says failing to manage grey fleets puts companies at risk of financial, reputational and legal harm. Marsh urged businesses to take control, adding: “More people die in work-related road incidents than in the workplace itself – proper checks save lives.”
