Europcar supports Camden’s EV transition with flexible van solution

The London Borough of Camden is cutting fleet emissions by switching a large portion of its vans to electric – without committing to long-term leases or outright purchase.

Working with Europcar, Camden identified that many of its short-wheelbase vans could be replaced immediately with electric alternatives. Instead of locking into typical 3–5 year leases, the council opted for a long-term flexible rental model, allowing it to scale and adapt the fleet as needed.

The first rollout included models such as the Renault Kangoo E-Tech, Volkswagen e-Transporter and Vauxhall Vivaro Electric, many fitted with job-specific equipment like racking, roof bars and tool storage.

Beyond supplying vehicles, Europcar supported the transition with driver training – covering charging, regenerative braking and how driving style affects range. Early feedback and usage data also helped address driver concerns and improve efficiency.

Following a successful first phase, Camden has already expanded its electric van fleet.

For fleets looking to move into EVs without long-term commitment, the model shows how flexible rental, combined with hands-on support, can remove some of the usual barriers to electrification.
