FleetCheck CEO Peter Golding: Why Unified Fleet Data Is Now Essential for UK Businesses

FleetCheck founder and CEO Peter Golding says the fleet industry is entering an era where data-driven decision-making is no longer optional — especially for SMEs operating without dedicated fleet managers. Speaking to FleetWise, Golding reflects on his journey from vehicle technician to software innovator, sparked by witnessing untrained staff being handed fleet responsibilities with significant legal and financial risk.

Golding warns that reactive maintenance remains one of the biggest cost drains on UK fleets, with downtime costing businesses £600–£1,800 per day. FleetCheck, he explains, was created to bring control, compliance and clarity to organisations still relying on instinct or spreadsheets.

He highlights growing challenges caused by an ageing fleet, stretched replacement cycles and the Government’s ZEV Mandate, which he says is “not mirroring market behaviour”. Many operators are holding onto petrol and diesel vehicles longer, increasing the risk of breakdowns, warranty expiry and non-compliance.

Electric van adoption also remains complex. Issues around payload, range and daytime charging mean many fleets are delaying electrification until battery technology improves. This has led to mixed fleets that require deeper digital oversight to remain compliant.

Golding emphasises that modern fleet software is now the “central nervous system” of operations. FleetCheck integrates over 200 data sources — from telematics to leasing, mileage, fuel and policy documents — giving managers real-time visibility and drivers a simple app to complete checks, report defects or access approved suppliers instantly.

With customer retention rates spanning 10–15 years, FleetCheck’s success is built on usability, onboarding support and a customer success team that acts as “an extension of the fleet department”.

Golding’s message is clear: fleets don’t need more data, they need actionable data. “The biggest risk isn’t missing a data point — it’s failing to act on one.”
