Large fleets with mixed vehicle types are seeing significant savings by using real-time diagnostics to prevent failures before they happen, according to a case study from public transport operator Go-Ahead Group.
Across its UK operations, Go-Ahead deployed more than 6,000 Geotab telematics devices to create a consistent view of vehicle health across a complex fleet. While the rollout focused on public transport, Geotab's connected hardware proves beneficial to car and van fleets managing ageing assets, tight uptime requirements and growing electrification.
Go-Ahead's engineering teams now receive live Diagnostic Trouble Codes, allowing them to intervene early rather than reacting to breakdowns. By monitoring low oil pressure alone, Go-Ahead London identifies 8–10 high-risk vehicles per month, avoiding catastrophic engine failures and saving up to £20,000 per engine. Monitoring coolant temperatures and faulty sensors also prevented more than 10 breakdowns in the first month, reducing recovery costs, lost productivity and disruption.
Real-time vehicle location data supports tighter operational control, while access to live state-of-charge data has helped the fleet maximise the return on investment from electric vehicles.
