UK employers are losing an average of 9.1 working days per affected employee each year due to grey fleet disruption, according to the Sixt UK Mobility Study 2025.
The research, from Sixt UK, surveyed 1,678 UK adults who use their own cars for work and found that 75% rely on personal vehicles for business travel. More than half (56%) experience vehicle-related disruption each year, including breakdowns, maintenance delays and insurance or administration issues.
Almost a quarter (24%) face disruption monthly or weekly, while 70% incur out-of-pocket costs and 21% cite insurance or admin as a key frustration. Despite this, only 38% of employees who drive daily for work have access to a company car.
Sixt said the heavy reliance on grey fleet creates challenges around duty of care, cost control and vehicle standards. Notably, 67% of employees said they would use a flexible company vehicle if available, yet fewer than 1% currently have access to one.
Andrew Smith, managing director at Sixt UK, said the findings highlight “hidden costs and risks” for employers and called for more flexible mobility solutions to improve efficiency and employee satisfaction.
