How DFS used telematics to cut fuel costs across 12,000 weekly deliveries

DFS achieved fuel savings of more than 6% across its delivery fleet after introducing Microlise telematics and camera technology to improve driver behaviour and operational visibility.

The furniture retailer operates a sizeable UK fleet made up of 250 7.5-tonne vehicles, 45 articulated trucks and 80 trailers, delivering around 12,000 customer orders every week.

To improve efficiency and reduce risk, DFS implemented Microlise Fleet Performance and ClearVision camera systems across the operation. The technology gave the business real-time insight into harsh braking, acceleration, cornering and driver performance, while integrated camera footage helped strengthen incident management and driver protection.

Rather than using the system purely for monitoring, DFS focused on coaching and engagement to improve standards across the fleet.

Chris Bamford, Group Fleet and Transport Compliance Manager at DFS, said: “People don’t want to do a bad job, they want to do the best they can.”

The result was a measurable reduction in fuel use across a large-scale operation where even small efficiency gains translate into substantial cost savings.

The case also highlights a wider fleet trend: telematics is increasingly being used not just for tracking vehicles, but for reducing operational costs, improving safety outcomes and supporting driver development at the same time.
