As SMS Energy’s fleet grew beyond 560 cars and vans, paper-based processes stopped delivering the visibility and control the business needed. Managing checks, incidents and compliance across a nationwide operation was becoming time-consuming and reactive, increasing cost risk as the fleet scaled.
By adopting FleetCheck, SMS Energy moved to a single digital platform covering vehicle checks, accident reporting, licence validation, PCNs and hire vehicle management. The biggest financial impact came from clearer oversight of hire vehicles. Drivers now record time-stamped photos through the Driver App at collection and return, giving the fleet team immediate evidence of vehicle condition.
“Our drivers use the Driver App when collecting hires to record any existing vehicle damage. That alone has saved us about £19,000 this year already,” said Yvonne Cannon, Fleet Manager at SMS Energy.
The system has also helped SMS Energy maintain a 79% First Notice of Loss rate, described by its insurer as “best in class”, while managing almost £180,000 of annual PCN activity more accurately. Automated reporting and instant DVLA licence checks keep the fleet audit-ready and reduce admin across HR and compliance.
“I don’t think any fleet can afford to be without FleetCheck if they want to remain fully compliant,” Cannon added.
