For United Utilities, vehicle availability is mission critical. With more than 2,300 cars, vans, HGVs and specialist assets operating around the clock, even minor faults can quickly escalate into major service disruption and cost.
To improve reliability while progressing towards its low carbon targets, United Utilities introduced real time fleet analytics and predictive maintenance tools through Vodafone Business Fleet Analytics, powered by Geotab. GO9 devices now provide live vehicle diagnostics, enabling maintenance teams to identify issues early and act before failures occur. This approach has been particularly valuable in extending the working life of older ICE vehicles while suitable electric replacements are phased in.
Driver safety scores improved by 25 percent, idling fell by 14 percent and fuel economy increased by 35 percent, cutting emissions per vehicle by 26 percent. Preventive maintenance delivered £10,813 in direct savings by addressing faults early rather than waiting for failures. Avoided downtime has an even greater impact, with each prevented vehicle off road day saving around £2,000 and protecting the business from penalties that can reach £15,600 per second for missed water supply targets.
Carl Doyle, Green Fleet Business Lead at United Utilities, said: “The reports and expertise we received helped us to understand what was possible while making sure changes supported our charging infrastructure so we could make the right decisions for our business.”
