Hyundai’s Ioniq 3 brings 300-mile range to a smaller, more affordable EV

Hyundai has revealed the Hyundai Ioniq 3, a compact electric hatchback offering up to 310 miles of range – bringing longer-distance EV driving into a smaller, more accessible part of the market.

Positioned below the larger Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, the Ioniq 3 is aimed at drivers who want something closer in size to a traditional supermini but with enough range to handle more than just short trips.

Two battery options will be available. A 42.2kWh version delivers up to 215 miles, while a larger 61kWh battery extends that to 310 miles. That upper figure puts it ahead of many smaller EVs currently on the road, where real-world ranges often sit closer to the 200-250 mile mark.

Charging is also competitive for this size of car. A 10-80% top-up takes around 29 minutes, and AC charging of up to 22kW gives more flexibility for home or workplace setups.

Performance is modest but in line with expectations. With up to 147PS and a 0-62 mph time of 9.0 seconds, it’s geared more towards everyday driving than outright speed – similar to other compact EVs in this segment.

Where it stands out is in how it balances size and usability. At this end of the market, cars are typically chosen for ease of driving, parking and lower running costs. The Ioniq 3 keeps that compact footprint but adds a larger-than-expected 441-litre boot, which is more in line with bigger hatchbacks.

Inside, it introduces Hyundai’s new Pios Connect system, with up to a 14.9-inch display and features like digital key access, route planning and vehicle-to-load functionality.

Pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the Ioniq 3 is expected to sit below larger electric models while offering range figures closer to them. That positioning could make it a more practical option for drivers who want to go electric without moving into a bigger or more expensive car.
