Leapmotor range extender technology could support Vauxhall, Citroen, Peugeot and Fiat

Leapmotor range extender technology could be rolled out across other European brands within the Stellantis portfolio as the group looks to increase technology sharing and reduce barriers to electrification.

Leapmotor currently offers its B10 and C10 SUVs with a choice of pure electric power or a range extender system, where a small petrol engine acts as a generator to recharge the battery while driving. The company claims the C10 Hybrid EV can cover up to 590 miles on a full battery and fuel tank while emitting just 10g per kilometre of CO2 in official testing.

International chief executive Tianshu Xin said the technology is being evaluated for use across other Stellantis brands, potentially including Vauxhall Opel, Citroen, Peugeot, DS and Fiat. He described range extender systems as a good interim solution while EV adoption and charging infrastructure continue to develop across Europe.

With Stellantis holding a 51 percent stake in Leapmotor’s international operations, Xin said sharing powertrains and platforms fits squarely with the rationale behind the partnership. Future Leapmotor models could also be built on existing Stellantis platforms, supporting localisation and faster deployment across European markets.
