New guidance for Human Form Recognition Systems on construction fleets – Plant Safety Group

The Construction Industry Plant Safety Group has published new good practice guidance on the use of human form recognition systems (HFRS), following growing adoption of the technology across construction fleets.

HFRS use AI-enabled cameras to detect people in predefined ‘danger zones’ around machinery, alerting operators and logging incident data. The new guidance standardises fitment, risk zones, data recording and operator training, aiming to reduce the number of workers struck by moving vehicles which account for 18% of all fatal incidents in construction.

Systems from suppliers such as Vue, Safety Shield and Ardent Hire are already being used by major contractors including Balfour Beatty, which mandated HFRs on its machines last year. While HFRS is not 100% reliable and does not replace core safety protocols, the guidance stresses its role in standardising deployment and enabling behavioural change across sites.
