Around 500,000 Northern Ireland residents without driveways can now apply for a cross-pavement home EV charging channel, following a rollout by Kerbo Charge in partnership with local installer Weev.
Unlike the rest of the UK, where approvals depend on local authorities, Northern Ireland’s Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has regional jurisdiction over public footways — allowing for nationwide approval of installations.
The new solution combines the charger, installation, and DfI licence in one package. The first system was installed in Newtownabbey last week. Residents feed their cable through a recessed channel, which seals behind it to keep pavements safe.
Infrastructure minister Liz Kimmins said the move “finds a sustainable solution to EV charging for those who live without a private driveway.”
Kerbo Charge co-founder Michael Goulden added that the scheme “removes a big barrier to EV adoption” across the region.
