Nottingham City Council has launched a new salary sacrifice scheme with Tusker, giving around 7,000 employees access to electric and ultra-low emission cars.
The scheme includes insurance, servicing, maintenance and breakdown cover, with contracts ranging from 24 to 60 months. A used car option is also available, opening up a lower-cost route into EVs for a wider group of employees.
In practice, the structure removes many of the usual barriers to switching. Costs are bundled into a single monthly deduction, there’s no upfront spend, and employees benefit from lower Benefit-in-Kind rates, making the overall proposition easier to understand and compare.
Behind the scenes, the council has put guardrails in place, including manager approvals and cross-team oversight from payroll, finance and legal, helping to manage the risks typically associated with early contract termination.
The launch has already seen strong uptake, with over 200 sign-ups on day one and 21 vehicle orders in the first week. That level of early interest points to how quickly demand can build when schemes are clearly communicated and backed by simple, all-in packages.
