The DVLA has updated its medical guidance for professional drivers, allowing those with diabetes to use Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS) — technology that tracks blood sugar levels in real time via sensors rather than finger-prick testing.
Effective 7 November 2025, the change brings Group 2 licence holders (lorry, bus, and coach drivers) in line with Group 1 drivers (car and motorcycle), who have been permitted to use CGMS since 2018.
“This update is about making life easier for drivers while maintaining safety on the roads,” said Tim Moss, DVLA chief executive. “By embracing modern technology, we’re enabling thousands of professional drivers to manage their condition more confidently.”
The policy has been widely welcomed by industry and health experts. Diabetes UK policy manager Nikki Joule called the move “transformative,” noting that it supports both road safety and employment opportunities for drivers using insulin.
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) also backed the change, with Aaron Peters, head of policy, adding: “Monitoring technology has come a long way — it’s right that regulation keeps pace.”
