Sanofi Pasteur MSD achieves 100% driver compliance and 31% reduction in insurance claims with ADT’s targeted risk management


Sanofi Pasteur MSD is the only European company dedicated exclusively to vaccines and a leading provider of vaccines in the UK. The company was formed in 1994 as a joint venture between Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccine division of Sanofi, and Merck Sharp & Dohme (known as MSD outside the US and Canada). Operating across the UK, Sanofi Pasteur MSD employs a fleet of 100 drivers, including a significant number of medical sales representatives who regularly travel to healthcare facilities. 


The Challenge: Inconsistent approach to work-related road safety

Sanofi Pasteur MSD identified a critical gap in its fleet operations: while some elements of fleet compliance and risk management existed within the business, there was no consistent or centrally managed strategy aligned with the company’s corporate responsibility commitments.

 The company needed to address several key issues:

·      Inconsistent driver standards across a geographically dispersed sales force regularly visiting healthcare settings

The Solution: Risk-based assessment and target training programme

In summer 2014, Sanofi Pasteur MSD engaged Applied Driving Techniques (ADT) to develop and implement a managed fleet compliance and risk management solution tailored to their pharmaceutical sales operation.

Comprehensive risk assessment framework. All 100 drivers completed an online Work Related Road Risk Assessment focusing on three critical areas: Driver, Journey, and Vehicle. This data-driven approach enabled ADT to identify high- and medium-risk employees who would benefit most from increased awareness and targeted driver training.

Bespoke multi-year training programme. ADT developed a flexible training strategy combining e-learning and in-vehicle sessions, scaled to individual risk levels:

Year One: Medium- and high-risk drivers completed an online hazard perception module, while very high-risk drivers received an additional half-day in-vehicle training session based on their individual risk assessment results.

Year Two: All drivers undertook a general awareness module online, with additional in-vehicle training provided on a case-by-case basis for those requiring further support.

Electronic licence monitoring. An automated licence checking service replaced the previous paper-based system, ensuring all drivers maintain valid and appropriate licences. This digital solution reduced administrative workload while eliminating inaccuracies inherent in manual checking processes.

Robust grey fleet management. For employees using personal vehicles for business purposes, ADT created a comprehensive grey fleet system ensuring compliance regardless of vehicle ownership. The solution includes systematic checks covering vehicle condition, maintenance schedules, insurance validity, legal requirements, and documentation—all managed centrally by ADT.

Clear audit trail. The integrated system provided Sanofi Pasteur MSD with complete visibility and documentation of all compliance activities, supporting both regulatory requirements and corporate governance standards.


The Results: Perfect compliance and dramatic safety improvements

Since implementing ADT's managed solution, Sanofi Pasteur MSD has achieved measurable improvements across all key performance indicators:

100% driver completion rate. Every driver in the fleet has completed the required risk assessments and training programmes, establishing a complete audit trail across all compliance and risk management requirements. This perfect completion rate demonstrates both programme effectiveness and driver engagement.

31% reduction in insurance claims. The targeted training approach—focusing resources on highest-risk drivers first—delivered significant reductions in incidents. Complete grey fleet compliance. Personal vehicles used for business purposes now meet the same rigorous standards as company-owned vehicles, eliminating a significant liability gap.
