Northern Ireland’s Mid and East Antrim Borough Council says a closer focus on tyre selection and lifecycle management has improved uptime across its commercial fleet, while also extending tyre life.
The council, which runs around 100 vans and 60 HGVs, has used Michelin tyres exclusively since 2021. For its heavier vehicles, it adopted a multi-life tyre policy using regrooving and retreading to keep casings in service for longer, rather than replacing tyres at the first sign of wear.
That approach has reduced punctures across the fleet, cutting vehicle downtime and helping services stay on schedule. Fewer replacements have also delivered environmental gains. Between 2023 and 2025, the council says the strategy saved 27.7 tonnes of CO2, diverted 10.2 tonnes of material from landfill and avoided the use of 13.2 tonnes of raw material compared with producing new tyres.

Research shows 40% of fleet tyres are replaced earlier than necessary, increasing avoidable SMR spend, while tyres left to wear too far can raise safety risks and extend braking distances to an extent more dangerous than phone-use while driving.
