UK Power Networks has launched Blue Light, a £1.18 million innovation project designed to simplify electricity connection processes for emergency services fleets and estates as they shift toward low-carbon technologies. Running from September 2024 to February 2026, the initiative aims to remove major barriers that have slowed decarbonisation across ambulance, police, and fire and rescue services.
The project responds to a growing need for complex grid upgrades as emergency services electrify vehicles and deploy on-site energy systems such as EV chargers, solar, and battery storage — often across more than 100 sites per organisation. UK Power Networks warns that current fragmented applications risk causing costly delays and network inefficiencies.
Blue Light will deliver a digital planning tool and new guidance framework to streamline connection requests, reduce costs, and improve coordination between agencies. The tool will provide real-time visibility of grid capacity and help emergency services assess site readiness for electrification.
“Emergency fleets face unique operational and budgetary challenges,” UK Power Networks said. “By improving visibility, coordination, and technical support, we can accelerate their path to net zero and strengthen energy resilience.”
