£10,000 fines loom under public charging rules

UK charge point operators are struggling to meet strict Government uptime rules, with potential fines of up to £10,000 per unit, according to new research from Monta.

The Public Charge Point Regulations require networks to maintain 99% uptime, defined as the proportion of time each charger remains operational and available, with even brief outages risking non-compliance.

In a survey of more than 200 senior decision-makers, just 4% reported uptime of 99.5% while 74% of networks achieve above 95% uptime. Fewer than one in five can access live performance data, limiting their ability to spot and fix issues before they escalate.

Jonathan Evans, Monta’s head of market for the UK and Ireland, said the findings show “the scale of operational, technical and financial pressures” facing the sector.

The BVRLA’s Industry Outlook Report 2025, produced with FleetWise, similarly warned that compliance would be one of the fleet industry’s weakest-performing areas this year as operators adjust to tough standards.
