Better fleet uptime starts long before the vehicle leaves the depot

Fleet downtime rarely begins with a roadside breakdown. More often, it starts with small defects that go unnoticed, delayed maintenance decisions or reporting processes that prevent fleet managers from acting before minor issues become costly operational problems.

Drawing on its experience supporting commercial fleets, Novuna Vehicle Solutions has identified five practical ways operators can reduce avoidable downtime and improve vehicle availability.

The first is making daily vehicle checks non-negotiable, helping drivers identify issues before they develop into more serious faults. Secondly, fleets should make defect reporting as simple as possible, using digital tools that allow drivers to report problems immediately and book repairs quickly.

Novuna also encourages fleet managers to use maintenance data to identify recurring faults across particular vehicles, depots or operating environments, allowing problems to be tackled proactively rather than repeatedly repaired.

A fourth recommendation is to combine servicing, MOTs and ancillary equipment maintenance into a single workshop visit wherever possible, reducing the number of days vehicles spend off the road.

Finally, Novuna stresses the importance of educating drivers. Helping drivers understand how early fault reporting contributes to safety, compliance and uptime encourages greater engagement and can prevent avoidable disruption.

The message reflects a wider theme running throughout this year's 100 Trusted Brands in Fleet report. The highest-performing fleets no longer view uptime as the responsibility of the workshop alone. Instead, they create a shared culture involving drivers, fleet managers and trusted supplier partners, using better processes, digital tools and operational insight to keep vehicles working harder for longer.
