A structured driver risk management programme has helped a UK fleet cut accident costs by more than half while significantly improving driver compliance and behaviour.
The initiative, delivered by Fleet Operations for a global pharmaceutical company operating 816 vehicles, combined continuous licence monitoring, driver risk scoring and targeted training delivered through a user-friendly driver app.
Drivers were initially assessed and assigned a risk score based on factors including mileage, licence endorsements, driving history and previous incidents. Profiles were then updated regularly, allowing higher-risk drivers to receive targeted digital training or in-vehicle coaching.
The programme delivered measurable improvements across the fleet:
- Accident costs reduced by 51%
- Driver risk score cut from 71.3% to 18.4%
- 89.9% compliance across employee driver groups
- 82% reduction in high-risk drivers
- 68% fall in speeding tickets and licence points
Incidents were analysed through root-cause investigations, allowing the fleet team to address the behaviours most likely to lead to collisions.
The case study highlights how combining continuous driver monitoring with accessible app-based training can improve safety outcomes while delivering substantial cost savings.
