National Grid Electricity Distribution has completed one of the UK’s largest shifts to electric company cars, replacing an employee ownership scheme covering 1,000 vehicles with a fully electric contract hire model.
Working with global leasing specialist Ayvens, the move is expected to cut 4,474 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, eliminating tailpipe emissions across the entire company car fleet.
Chris Mayell, NGED’s Head of Fleet, said: “Reducing our carbon footprint and working towards net zero targets is a priority for us, and electrifying our fleet allows us to eliminate tailpipe emissions across 1,000 company cars.
“Ayvens have been a critical partner in this achievement, ensuring the changeover has been timely and efficient, supporting us in waving early termination fees and engaging with our drivers.”
NGED employees on the scheme typically cover 17,000 miles per year and can choose from a range of EVs including Tesla, Polestar and BMW, on two, three or four year leases.
Chris Black, Commercial Director of Ayvens, said: “Transitioning 1,000 vehicles from ownership to contract hire EVs requires careful planning around funding structures, vehicle selection, and driver engagement… using data-led insights to help organisations make the switch to zero-emission fleets without compromising on performance.”
To support the rollout, NGED has installed more than 500 charge points, including 176 rapid bays at 84 primary substations and 13 at office sites, ensuring drivers are within 10 miles of a company-owned charger.
