Success Stories: Felixstowe shows autonomous electric fleets working at scale

Two autonomous electric trucks at the Port of Felixstowe.

The Port of Felixstowe is expanding its autonomous electric truck fleet to 100 vehicles, providing one of the clearest examples yet of commercial autonomy being deployed at scale in the UK.

The latest order builds on an existing deployment of Westwell Q-Trucks operating in mixed-traffic container-terminal operations. Felixstowe says it was the first deployment of its kind in Europe.

The vehicles work within a controlled port environment, where routes are repetitive and utilisation is high.

That combination matters.

Autonomous technology is likely to become commercially viable first where uncertainty is limited and vehicles carry out highly repeatable tasks.

Ports, logistics hubs, depots and industrial sites therefore provide a natural proving ground.

For fleet managers, Felixstowe shows that autonomy does not have to begin with fully driverless vehicles on public roads. It can start with narrow, well-defined applications where productivity and utilisation benefits are easier to measure.
