Success Story: Bidfood turns loading time into electric-truck charging time

An overhead charging system allowing HGVs to recharge while occupying loading bays.

Bidfood has electrified its Slough depot using an overhead charging system designed to keep valuable yard space available for normal operations.

The installation uses a 600kW Kempower power unit serving four charging positions, allowing electric HGVs to recharge while occupying existing loading bays. Two electric trucks are currently operating from the depot.

That is what makes the project particularly useful for other fleets.

Rather than creating a separate charging area, Bidfood has integrated charging into an activity that already creates vehicle dwell time.

Trucks can recharge during loading windows without taking additional parking capacity away from the depot.

The overhead arrangement also removes bulky charging equipment from working areas, an important consideration on busy logistics sites.

Bidfood is even considering allowing suppliers to use the infrastructure in future.

The wider principle mirrors other FleetWise coverage of shared and high-power charging: the best infrastructure strategy starts with how vehicles already operate, rather than trying to force operations around the chargers.
