Could one rapid charger serve an entire row of fleet vehicles?

A Go Eve charging set up that allows multiple vehicles to be charged in a row from one source.

Go Eve has secured backing for the next generation of technology designed to make high-power fleet charging more scalable.

Its £750,000 Innovate UK-supported project will further develop DockChain, which enables one DC fast charger to serve multiple parking bays sequentially. Vehicles remain connected and the charger moves automatically between them rather than requiring separate rapid hardware at every space.

For fleet depots, the potential benefit is straightforward.

High-power DC chargers are expensive, and installing one for every vehicle can also create substantial electrical-infrastructure requirements.

A sequential system could allow fleets to provide rapid charging capability across more bays while using fewer high-cost power units.

The new project will improve software, hardware and session control, while also exploring future vehicle-to-grid capability.

The concept will not suit every operation. Fleets still need to understand dwell time, departure schedules and the amount of energy every vehicle requires.

But for vehicles parked for predictable periods, it could make high-power infrastructure considerably easier to scale.
