The UK’s public electric vehicle charging network continued to grow steadily in 2025, expanding by just over 19% as more than 14,000 new charge devices were installed, according to data from Zapmap.
By the end of December, the UK had 87,796 public charge devices across 45,033 locations, providing more than 116,000 individual connectors. Growth was strongest at the top end of the market, with ultra-rapid chargers (150kW+) increasing by 41% year-on-year to 9,893 units. Charging hubs – sites with six or more rapid or ultra-rapid chargers – rose by 39% to 748 locations, improving confidence for drivers covering longer distances.
Encouragingly for fleets operating outside the South East, high-powered charging growth is becoming more geographically balanced. The North West recorded growth of more than 35%, while Wales, the East of England and Northern Ireland all saw increases of around 29%.
The infrastructure update comes alongside confirmation from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders that 2025 was a record year for battery electric car sales. Zapmap’s latest driver survey also found satisfaction among EV drivers at 88%, with fewer than 3% considering a return to petrol or diesel.
Melanie Shufflebotham, COO at Zapmap, said the focus on ultra-rapid charging is helping build confidence for both existing drivers and the next wave of EV adopters, while progress on Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) funding is expected to translate into stronger near-home charging provision from 2026.
