UK’s first megawatt eHGV charging hub goes live at East Midlands Gateway

The UK’s first megawatt scale electric HGV charging hub has opened at Kuehne+Nagel’s East Midlands Gateway site, marking a major milestone for zero emission freight. Delivered through the eFreight 2030 programme, the facility uses British designed Voltempo HyperCharger technology and is the first Megawatt Charging System ready charger deployed in the UK.

Designed and delivered by Voltempo, the hub can provide charging rates of up to one megawatt, allowing future electric HGVs to recharge in under 30 minutes. The site includes six DC charging bays supplied by a single HyperCharger pod, with power dynamically shared across vehicles.

Initially, the infrastructure will support 12 electric HGVs, including DAF XF Electric and Renault Trucks E Tech T models. These vehicles will operate on regional, national and international routes, generating real world data on energy use, charging cycles and total operating costs.

Simon Smith, chief executive of Voltempo, said the deployment is “a significant milestone for zero emission freight” and infrastructure designed for real world operations today.
