Volkswagen ID.3 Neo to launch with phone-as-key access and ability to power devices from the car

Volkswagen is set to unveil the ID.3 Neo in April, marking a major update to its electric hatchback alongside a wider software upgrade across the ID line-up.

The new model introduces a revised operating system that is already available on the ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7. Key additions include enhanced driver assistance with traffic light detection, One Pedal Driving for improved energy recovery, and a redesigned infotainment system with an integrated app store.

Drivers will also benefit from a new digital key, enabling drivers to unlock and start the car using a smartphone or smartwatch, alongside a more intuitive interior with physical buttons returning to the steering wheel.

One of the more practical additions is the ability to power external equipment directly from the car’s battery. Devices such as tools, coffee machines or e-bikes can be plugged in and run from the vehicle, offering added flexibility for work and leisure use.

Efficiency gains are also in focus. Entry-level ID.4 and ID.5 models receive a new 140 kW motor and LFP battery, increasing range by up to 40 km while improving durability.

Looking ahead, Volkswagen’s upcoming compact EVs – including ID. Polo and ID. Cross – will build on these updates, signalling a more practical, software-led approach to everyday fleet electrification.
