While delivered in a public-sector setting, the project addresses challenges now facing fleets, workplaces and charging operators alike, from bay availability and driver behaviour to reducing friction at the point of use through smarter rules, technology and partnerships.
Working with Mobilize Power Solutions, the council installed public EV charging across six town-centre car parks in just three months, supporting its Air Quality Action Plan and wider climate commitments in a borough of nearly 193,000 people. The project demonstrates how infrastructure, payments and enforcement can be designed together to save time and reduce operational complexity.
Mobilize Power Solutions delivered the charging infrastructure and led a closed testing phase in 2021 to ensure reliability before public launch, a critical step for fleets where downtime and user confidence matter. The chargers are integrated with MiPermit’s Park & Charge service, allowing drivers to pay for parking and electricity in a single transaction via the existing app.
Usage is capped at four hours to maintain bay availability, while sensor technology enables remote monitoring and clearer visibility of charger availability, cutting wasted journeys and idle time.
Cllr Simon Crow said the scheme “will provide a great benefit to residents and an opportunity to use more sustainable transport,” adding that it gives users “confidence to make the switch to electric vehicles.”
