WJ Group Cuts Carbon Emissions and Costs with Electric Vehicle Push

WJ Group, a major player in the UK highways and construction sector, has made impressive progress in slashing its carbon footprint by switching to electric vehicles (EVs).

Over the past three years, the company has reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 134 tonnes of CO₂ – the equivalent of saving more than 52,000 litres of diesel – thanks to a major drive to electrify its fleet. Alongside environmental gains, WJ has cut operational costs and seen a boost in employee confidence when it comes to adopting EVs.

This effort supports WJ’s wider goal of reaching Net Zero for its direct emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2032 – a target that’s been independently verified by the Science Based Targets initiative.

A key partner in this transition has been Rightcharge, a specialist in EV charging solutions. With Rightcharge, WJ drivers can now use a single payment card at over 70% of the UK’s public charging points and are automatically reimbursed for home charging costs – money paid directly into their home energy accounts.

Rightcharge also provides detailed reports that track carbon savings, energy sources, and charging behaviours. These insights are helping WJ to measure and manage its emissions reductions effectively.

WJ’s fleet is now made up of 43% fully electric vehicles and 57% plug-in hybrids, and confidence among staff is growing as home charging becomes more accessible and affordable. By charging vehicles overnight, employees are also helping the company draw on greener, renewable energy sources.

WJ’s progress was recently recognised with the Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2025 Kier Transportation Supply Chain Awards.

Paul Aldridge, Sustainability Director at WJ Group, said: “Electrifying our fleet is central to our Net Zero strategy. Thanks to solutions like Rightcharge, we’re not only cutting emissions and costs – we’re also making it easier for employees to go electric.”

Charlie Cook, CEO of Rightcharge, added: “We’re proud to support WJ’s clean transport transition and excited to help drive further progress.”
