Fleets using AI-enabled telematics from Targa Telematics recorded a 12% reduction in vehicle thefts in 2025, highlighting how predictive technology is delivering measurable security and cost benefits for operators.
According to Targa, combining artificial intelligence and machine learning with live vehicle data allows fleets to identify risky behaviour earlier and intervene before theft occurs. Its Smart Vehicle Protector system analyses behavioural and contextual data to monitor vehicles continuously, flag emerging patterns and trigger preventative actions from control centres in real time.
The financial impact is significant. Data from the Targa Telematics Observatory suggests AI-driven theft prevention can reduce incidents by 20–30%, equating to potential savings of €1.5–2 million (£1.3–1.75m) per year for medium and large fleets. Rental operators, in particular, have seen strong results, with enhanced risk scoring and alert workflows improving their ability to combat fraud and vehicle misuse.
Chris Horbowyj, UK commercial director at Targa Telematics, said: “Our mission is to prevent theft rather than simply react to it. By applying advanced algorithms to large volumes of telematics data, we’re significantly reducing the economic impact of theft while improving fleet efficiency.”
