Chinese manufacturer BYD is set to launch its new flagship SUV, the Great Tang, in China this May, with headline figures that point to where the large EV market could be heading.
The full-size, seven-seat SUV will be offered as both a pure electric and plug-in hybrid, with the BEV version claiming up to 950km (around 590 miles) of range. That puts it well beyond most current electric SUVs on sale in the UK, including models like the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90.
Alongside range, the Great Tang focuses on comfort and technology, with features such as air suspension, rear-wheel steering and a high-spec interior designed around passenger space. Despite its size, it’s expected to be priced competitively in its home market, undercutting many premium rivals.
It isn’t confirmed for the UK, but it highlights the pace of development from Chinese brands. Longer range, faster charging and high levels of standard equipment are becoming expected, not optional.
