Pothole-related breakdowns double in early-2025 – RAC

Pothole

The RAC attended 9439 pothole-related breakdowns in the first quarter of 2025 – double the previous quarter’s figure – highlighting the worsening state of UK roads. These incidents, caused by damage to suspension components, wheels and shock absorbers, now account for 1.5% of all RAC call-outs.

Repair costs for damage beyond punctures average £460. RAC head of policy Simon Williams called the figures “a clear reflection of the true state of the UK’s roads,” urging councils to adopt long-term preventative maintenance like surface dressing.

"Yes officer, it was definitely a pothole."

Government data reveals 19% of local authorities have more than 10% of minor roads in 'red' condition, requiring urgent attention. Derbyshire was worst for both minor and major roads.

The Government has pledged £1.6 billion for road repairs in 2025/26, with councils required to publish progress reports to secure full funding.

The RHA has echoed calls for faster, more sustainable repair strategies, highlighting the economic and daily disruption caused by poor road conditions.
