The Government launches ZEV mandate review

The Government has formally launched a consultation that could significantly reduce the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate.

Ministers are seeking views on lowering the requirement for EVs to account for 80% of new car sales by 2030, with options of 70%, 60% or as low as 50% now on the table. Keeping the existing 80% target is also being considered.

The move follows sustained pressure from vehicle manufacturers, which argue that current targets are forcing heavy discounting and putting UK investment and jobs at risk. It comes despite UK electric car sales reportedly rising 29% this year.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the Government’s ultimate goal had not changed, but that targets needed to remain practical and take industry “on the journey”.

For fleets, the consultation introduces another potentially significant change to the policy landscape. We’ll be watching closely to see where the 2030 target ultimately lands – and what any revision means for vehicle supply, pricing and the pace of fleet electrification.
