QTS Group is demonstrating how combining electrification, data and safety technology can reduce fleet costs and risk at scale. The rail infrastructure contractor operates 441 vehicles and has accelerated its fleet transformation through targeted vehicle replacement, telematics and artificial intelligence driven safety systems.
The business has added 10 Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric vehicles, following the replacement of 10 high-emission 4x4s with hybrids last year. This puts QTS on track to reach 45 electrified vehicles by October, including 20 fully electric models.
Alongside vehicle changes, QTS reviewed every vehicle request to identify smaller, more efficient alternatives. This reduced total fleet size by more than 12%, helping the company achieve an 18% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, well ahead of its 6% target.
To cut road risk, QTS fitted its permanent fleet with Samsara dual-facing camera systems. The telematics platform identifies high-risk behaviours, supports targeted driver training and shares data with insurers to improve risk management. Usage data is also helping the fleet team identify vehicles suitable for EV replacement.
Fleet manager Aidan Jenkins said: “The expansion of our electric vehicle programme, combined with cutting edge AI safety technology, is delivering real operational, environmental, and safety benefits.”
QTS plans to introduce AI-powered driver coaching in 2026, using a customised digital avatar to deliver remote training and track performance improvements, reinforcing a data-led approach other fleets can replicate.
