UK to phase out 2G network: is your telematics system safe?

The UK’s 2G mobile network is being phased out, raising urgent questions for fleets still reliant on older telematics, GPS trackers and camera systems installed before 2016.

Launched in the 1990s, 2G provided the backbone for early fleet connectivity, but operators are now reallocating the spectrum to 4G and 5G networks. The shutdown will render legacy 2G equipment unable to transmit data, cutting off location tracking, maintenance feedback and safety alerts. For fleets, the risk is sudden loss of visibility, disruption to operations and unexpected replacement costs.

Vendors including Samsara and Frotcom are using the approaching deadline to encourage fleets to plan upgrades. Both stress that proactive migration avoids service disruption and opens the door to AI-driven features such as predictive maintenance and real-time coaching.
