Electrified vehicle production grows despite pressure on UK manufacturing

UK commercial vehicle production fell sharply in July, but electrified output moved in the opposite direction.

According to the SMMT, commercial vehicle production dropped 34.4% year on year to 1888 units, reflecting continued pressure on the wider manufacturing sector. However, production of fully electric and hybrid vehicles rose 6.8% to 25,678 units, marking the first monthly increase of 2026.

For fleet managers, the important signal is where manufacturers are continuing to invest.

Even in a difficult production environment, electrified vehicles are taking a larger role in UK output. That supports the longer-term direction of fleet procurement, while also underlining the importance of domestic manufacturing capacity, model availability and supply resilience.

The immediate takeaway is not to read weaker headline production as a slowdown in electrification. Instead, fleets should continue to track which manufacturers are increasing electrified output and where that could improve future vehicle choice, lead times and commercial support.

As more investment shifts towards electric and hybrid production, procurement decisions will increasingly be shaped by which brands can combine suitable vehicles with reliable UK supply.
