Which UK cities are winning the race to build EV charging networks?

New research highlights how uneven the rollout of public EV charging remains across UK cities, with some areas accelerating rapidly while others lag behind. Analysis from Stellantis & You shows London still leads on scale, with more than 24,000 charge points, but Dundee tops the accessibility rankings with 222 chargers per 100,000 people.

Looking at growth over the past five years, Coventry stands out. The city expanded its public charging network from 203 chargers in 2020 to 2,578 in 2025, an increase of 1,170%. Birmingham followed closely, growing from just 103 chargers to 1,264 over the same period, while Swansea recorded an eight-fold increase, rising from 37 to 316 chargers.

The picture is less positive elsewhere. Southampton has just 119 chargers, equating to 48 per 100,000 people, with only 21 rated at 50kW or above. Bristol, Liverpool and Leicester also feature among cities where infrastructure density remains relatively low.

Looking ahead, growth is expected to continue. Edinburgh is forecast to expand from 906 chargers in 2026 to 1,676 by 2030, while Coventry is predicted to more than double again to over 5,200 chargers. For fleets planning regional EV deployment, the data underlines why location still plays a critical role in charging confidence and operational planning.
