UK fleets are falling behind on the road to electrification

A new study from leasing and mobility provider Alphabet GB (GB) reveals that UK fleets are falling behind on the road to electrification—just as Net Zero Week kicks off.

According to the research, nearly one in three UK fleets still have 25% or fewer EVs in operation, and 11% report no EVs at all. Despite progress in sectors like delivery and retail, wider uptake is lagging. Alarmingly, almost a third of fleet managers believe it could take up to a decade for mandatory emissions reporting to make a real impact on carbon reduction.

The study also exposed regional divides: while optimism that tighter legislation will bring about the change(s) needed is high in London (72.9%) and the East Midlands (70%), confidence drops sharply in the South West and South East, where fewer than 1 in 4 fleet managers share that view.

Caroline Sandall-Mansergh of Alphabet (GB) emphasised the need for “clear, actionable strategies” to help fleets and drivers accelerate decarbonisation—and highlighted tools like Alphabet’s new Carbon Manager as key enablers in that transition.
