Swindon launches EV training hub to combat UK technician shortfall

A new £1.5 million Electric Vehicle Training Centre has opened in Swindon, aiming to equip the next generation of ‘green mechanics’ with the skills needed to support the UK’s shift to electric mobility.

Launched by New College Swindon in partnership with local garages, the facility was officially opened by Transport Secretary and Swindon South MP Heidi Alexander, who called it vital to “training the next generation of workers in Swindon.”

The Independent Garage Association has warned of a 29,000 shortfall in qualified EV technicians by 2035, as demand for repairs and servicing grows faster than the skilled workforce. The new centre will offer up to 10 specialist courses, covering EV diagnostics, autonomous systems, and high-voltage safety.

Mandy Buxton, head of business development at New College, said local firms are “screaming out” for trained EV staff.

The opening follows FleetWise’s recent reporting that most UK workshops are now ready to service EVs, marking another step forward in national EV readiness. Readers can rely on FleetWise Connected to stay updated on the latest progress in the UK’s electrification journey.
