Tomorrow’s company-car drivers may arrive expecting an EV

Electric vehicles could soon become the default expectation for a new generation of company-car drivers.

Research from E.ON Next suggests 55% of learner drivers would like their first vehicle to be fully electric.

For fleets, the finding provides an early indication of how employee expectations may change as younger drivers enter company-car, salary-sacrifice and grey-fleet schemes.

Businesses planning vehicle policies several years ahead should therefore avoid assuming EV adoption will always require the same level of persuasion or education.

Instead, younger employees may increasingly expect charging access, simple reimbursement and a strong choice of electric vehicles as standard workplace benefits.

Fleet managers should continue matching vehicles to genuine operating requirements, but employee demand could become an increasingly positive force behind electrification.

The longer-term opportunity is to design fleet policies that are ready for that shift rather than reacting after employee expectations have already changed.

For businesses competing for younger talent, an accessible and well-supported EV offering may become part of the wider employee proposition.
