The avoidable driving habits proven to cut SMR costs

Poor driving habits are quietly adding pressure to fleet service, maintenance and repair budgets, according to new research from Venson Automotive Solutions. The study highlights how everyday behaviours behind the wheel are accelerating vehicle wear and increasing downtime across fleets.

Almost a quarter of drivers surveyed, 23%, admit to driving too fast over potholes or speed bumps, putting added strain on tyres, suspension and steering components at a time when road conditions are already challenging. The research also found that 15% of drivers ignore dashboard warning lights or unusual noises, while 12% overload vehicles and a further 12% brake late.

The most common habit is resting a hand on the gearstick, reported by 35% of drivers, which places constant pressure on gearbox components and raises the risk of premature failure.

Lee O’Neill, operations director at Venson Automotive Solutions, said: “Individually, these behaviours may seem minor, but across a fleet they can translate into higher SMR costs, increased downtime and avoidable road safety risks.”

He added that targeted driver education and consistent standards can deliver measurable improvements in cost control, vehicle availability and safety.
