BMW lets drivers pay for charging directly through the car – no apps or cards needed

BMW is rolling out a new ‘Plug & Charge’ system that allows drivers to pay for public charging simply by plugging in – with the car itself handling authentication and payment.

The system links a credit card to the driver’s account via the My BMW or MINI app. Once set up, the vehicle automatically connects to compatible charging points, starts charging and processes payment without the need for apps, cards or subscriptions.

For drivers, the appeal is simplicity. Public charging has often meant juggling multiple apps, RFID cards or accounts depending on the network. This setup removes those steps, making the experience closer to using contactless payment.

It’s particularly relevant for company car and fleet drivers, where vehicles may be shared or used temporarily. Users can log in and pay directly, without needing a long-term charging contract.

The service has launched across more than 1,400 charge points in Germany and Austria, with further rollout planned across more markets in 2026.

As Felix Schmidt, Head of Charging Experience at BMW, puts it: “BMW is taking a big step towards truly seamless EV charging – no charging contracts, no cards, no friction at the station.”
