New Government data gives fleets another reason to reassess EV-ready routes

The Department for Transport has updated its monthly public EV charging infrastructure data, providing fleets with a fresh view of how rapidly the UK network is developing.

The October update forms part of the Government's faster indicators programme, using Zapmap data to track public charger availability across the UK.

The latest full quarterly publication previously recorded 121,171 public charging devices at 1 July 2026, including 28,887 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers rated at 50kW or above.

For fleet managers, the most useful takeaway is not simply that charger numbers are increasing.

It is that EV suitability assessments can date quickly.

A route rejected 12 or 18 months ago because dependable charging was unavailable may now have substantially better infrastructure.

That is particularly relevant to regional field-service, company-car and van fleets where vehicles regularly travel beyond depot or home charging range.

Fleet managers should therefore periodically revisit routes classed as unsuitable for electrification and compare current infrastructure against actual driver journeys.
