UK garages call for MOT cost cap to increase to £95

Fleets running vehicles over three years old could be facing an MOT cost increase, up from the current £54.85 maximum to £95.

Ahead of talks with the UK Government, the Independent Garage Association (IGA) ran a survey among its members, which revealed they were facing multiple commercial pressures relating to the cost of labour, equipment, rent, fuel, energy, compliance, administration and staff training.

Stuart James, Chief Executive of the IGA, said "We are being advised by garage owners that without a significant increase to the MOT fee, they cannot continue to sustain this ever-increasing cost burden."

The MOT cost cap has remained unchanged since 2010, and the IGA's members are reporting that the costs of running a garage and delivering an MOT test have risen significantly since. Some have even reduced MOT capacity due to the increasing cost problems.

The IGA says if the MOT fee continues to fall behind the 'true cost' of delivering the test, motorists could be faced with fewer testing appointments, reduced availability, and less consumer choice.

"We will continue to challenge the Government to deliver an acceptable resolution to this issue before it causes a level of consumer detriment," said Stuart.
